Choosing the best paint colors for your home

October 06, 2021 Cincinnati Builder News 472 Hits

When it comes time to painting the walls in your custom home, you’re going to need to make some big decisions. The right colors can help create a sense of peace and tranquility, accentuate your home’s unique features and add dimension and character. The wrong colors can do the opposite, and let’s face it, no one wants to paint a room twice.

Choosing the best colors for your rooms takes time, a little patience and maybe even an expert who understands color theory and can offer a fresh perspective to help you pick colors you’ll love for years to come.

One thing we can’t stress enough is the importance of hiring a professional house painter who has years of experience, a large portfolio of past work and excellent references. Painting a room well is harder than it looks, and fly-by-night painting companies often overcharge and underdeliver.

Below are our tips on how to choose the best paint colors for your custom home.

Look everywhere for inspiration
We recommend taking your time and look for inspiration everywhere from magazines to Pinterest to paint company websites. In fact, this is where Pinterest has an advantage when it comes to social media sites. Use Pinterest to gather your ideas so when it comes time to choose your paint colors you can find your favorites in one place.

Where do you love to vacation
If your idea of the perfect getaway is a beautiful beach, why not choose tranquil blues or a light beige or tans that evoke the color of sand. Prefer the mountains? Choose various shades of green. Color gives you a chance to take what you love about the indoors and bring it inside.

Use a color wheel
One of the most challenging things about choosing paint colors is finding shades that compliment one another. When painting a room in a custom home, you’ll want to accentuate all of its unique features, and that usually means using a few colors to create just the right look.

Color wheels are inexpensive and can help you come up with color schemes easily. They can help you get a better understanding of color theory so you can be more confident that the colors you choose will work great in your home.

Use neutral or pastel shades
There are plenty of great reasons to paint walls in your home in neutral shades. Not only can beiges, light grays and whites strike a soothing tone, but they can accentuate elements like artwork, furniture, rugs and windows. Pastel shades are a wonderful way to add understated, quiet elegance to a room while also giving it a pop of color.

Pull color from a print
If you’re looking for a color for an accent wall, we recommend looking at a print that gets attention, like floral print curtains or a couch that features a striped fabric pattern. This is an ideal way to draw a room together and make its design harmonious and cohesive.

Use an interior designer
Choosing the best paint colors for your custom home can be a big decision and one you’ll want to get right the first time. If you need a little help getting the ball rolling or need feedback before heading to the paint store, check in with an interior designer or color consultant.

Your designer may want to come to the house at various times of the day to get a sense of your home’s natural light. And they may suggest that you reconsider the paint colors you’ve chosen, especially if they think other colors would work better day and night.

Hire a professional painter
Unless you’ve got an incredibly steady hand and unlimited patience, we recommend working with a professional painter who has experience painting interiors and exteriors of custom homes. Check to make sure the painter you hire is insured and ask to see photos of their work, and don’t forget to check their references.
